MURAL DEL MAR

Cumbaya, Ecuador - 2021

This is a collage of images of the diving trips that inspired me to create El mural del mar (The mural of the ocean).

Where is the starting point of a project? I believe that the inspiration of El mural del mar (The mural of the ocean) started in 2014 when I went on a trip with my mom and sisters to the Galapagos islands. Through this trip we decided to learn how to dive and then, we wen together on a few diving trips. It was a really happy time and when my mom asked me to make a mural in the entry of her house, I proposed a mural inspired by our diving adventures. So she agreed and then I started. I love the ocean and it was my dream to learn to dive. It is such an optimistic experience to dive deep into areas of our planet and discover other creatures. I wish to advocate for the healing of our oceans, maybe writing this is the first step. How do we advocate for our environment?

THE PROCESS OF ONE CERAMIC PIECE:

1. Model one piece by hand

2. It has to dry

3. It goes in the oven

4. Paint it

5. Glaze it

6. Goes again in the oven

7. Install it in the wall adding other mosaic pieces

8. It is done!

In the mural there are red corals in the bottom of the ocean, while fish, starfish and seahorses swim, then there is a shark, swimming peacefully with me, my sisters, my mom and our friends. We dive with two moon fish which float towards the surface, a turtle and more fish. Then there is our Ecuadorian boat approaching the island of the metamorphosis of the monarch butterfly. On the island there is a plant reaching to the sky where the sun and the butterflies fly…
